L’OCCHIO MAGICO DI PAOLO GUIDOTTI DONA NUOVA VITA AGLI OGGETTI IN DISUSO

Queste maschere che ho fotografato per la realizzazione del Calendario 2015 della ditta di inchiostri Colorgraf sono una creazione del pittore e illustratore Paolo Guidotti, classe 1938.

È stato entusiasmante collaborare negli anni con lui, seguendolo all’interno di quello che è un vero e proprio studio-fucina, straripante di oggetti riemersi da materiali di recupero che Paolo sapientemente riassembla e ri-crea. La sua incredibile capacità di farci scoprire volti, animali, angeli, tirandoli fuori da ciò che gettiamo via distrattamente ogni giorno, mi ha sempre affascinato. Paolo ha illustrato per diversi anni le copertine degli Oscar Mondadori, ed è stato art director Rizzoli dal 1971 al 1981. Vorrei rendere omaggio alla sua opera con questa citazione poetica, tratta  da ‘Il mondo come Design e rappresentazione’ di Andrea Rauch (Usher Arte, 2009) :

‘Paolo Guidotti è un discreto e sottile rigattiere della memoria. I suoi materiali sono, alla rinfusa, frammenti di imballaggio, lamierini di recupero, smalti, scatole di sigari, occhi di vetro. Ma attenzione: nessuno di essi vive senza l’intervento affettuoso e severo dell’artista, né senza il supporto essenziale e vitale del suo immaginario. Un pezzo di legno scheggiato può essere dunque la testa di un gatto; una falce di metallo mangiata dalla ruggine un quarto di luna. Solo a patto, però, che si voglia ritrovare quel gatto o quella falce di luna, facendoli riemergere da un antico ricordo d’infanzia o da un frammento di recente esperienza. Guidotti è un solitario. Noi ce lo immaginiamo sempre per strade di notte, con gli occhi a terra, a chiedersi quali vicende siano state gettate via, oggi, dallo scorrere isterico di quel metaforico fiume urbano. Quali emozioni si siano arenate nei rifiuti che ingombrano gli angoli delle città. Con un gesto di colore Paolo permette ai detriti di questa civiltà di raccontare ancora una storia, ancora una favola’.

The masks I photographed  for the creation of the 2015 Calendar by the house of inks ‘Colorgraf’ are a creation of the painter and illustrator Paolo Guidotti, born 1938.

It was exciting to work with him over the years, following him inside what is a true smithy-studio, overflowing with objects re-emerged from recycled materials skillfully re-assembled and re-created by Paolo. Its amazing ability to make us see faces, animals, angels, pulling them out of the materials that we throw away every day absently, has always fascinated me. Paolo illustrated the Oscar Mondadori covers for several years, and he was the Rizzoli art director from 1971 to 1981. I would like to pay tribute to his work with this poetic words, taken from a quote by Andrea Rauch, ‘The World as Design and Representation’, Usher Art, 2009:

‘Paolo Guidotti is a discreet and subtle scrap merchant of memory. Its materials, randomly, are fragments of packaging, small recyclable metal sheets, enamels, cigar boxes, glass eyes. But beware: not one of them lives without the affectionate and strict intervention of the artist, nor without the essential and vital support of his imaginary. So a piece of chipped wood can be the head of a cat; a metal sickle eaten by rust can be a quarter moon. Only provided, however, that you want to find the cat or the quarter moon, making them emerge from an old childhood memory or from a fragment of a recent experience. Guidotti is a loner. We always imagine him in the streets at night, eyes to the ground, wondering what stories were laid off today by the hysterical passing of our metaphorical urban river. What emotions have been stranded in the trash cluttering the corners of the city. With a wave of color Paolo allows to debris of our civilization to tell one more story, one more tale ‘.
