DE YOUNG MUSEUM DI SAN FRANCISCO: TAGLI DI LUCE E GEOMETRIE ASTRATTE

Il De Young Museum è uno dei più storici musei di San Francisco, fondato nel 1894 da Michael H. de Young e immerso nel verde del Golden Gate Park.

Nel 2005 è stato riaperto al pubblico, nella nuova sede realizzata su progetto degli architetti svizzeri Herzog & De Meuron.

Visitandolo in una giornata di sole si rimane colpiti alla vista dei tagli di luce che creano disegni astratti sui volumi geometrici della struttura.

Al suo interno vi sono diverse opere permanenti, e tra tutte  mi ha colpito molto quella dell’artista contemporaneo James Turrell.

Si chiama Three Gems e si tratta di un’istallazione seminterrata simile a uno stupa tibetano o a un bunker, che permette di osservare il cielo da una prospettiva inusuale, attraverso un foro circolare nel soffitto. La vista si altera grazie ai particolari disegni della luce naturale che penetra nell’ambiente creando forti contrasti di luce e ombre in continua evoluzione.

The De Young Museum is one of the most historic museums in San Francisco, founded in 1894 by Michael H. de Young and immersed in the Golden Gate Park.

In 2005 it was reopened to the public in the new center built and designed by Swiss architects Herzog & De Meuron.

If you visit it in a sunny day, you are certainly struck by the sight of strong light cuts creating abstract designs on the geometric volumes of the structure.

Inside there are several permanent works, and among all I was very impressed by the artwork of the contemporary artist James Turrell.

It’s called Three Gems and it’s an installation basement like a Tibetan stupa or a bunker, that allows you to see the sky from an unusual perspective, through a circular hole in the ceiling. The view is altered due to special designs of the natural light that penetrate the environment by creating strong contrasts of light and shadows in constant evolution.
